The Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is located in Hermann Park, just south of downtown and easily accessed by the new Metro Rail. Or if you prefer, you can easily find parking available in the vicinity.

Unlike the early days at the Houston Zoo, there has recently been a lot of focus on natural habitats for animals, reptiles, and birds, alike.  There is always a new facility either opening or being planned.  This large zoo is situated on 55 acres and houses 4,500 animals from over 900 different species, and is visited each year by 1,500,000 people.

There is something for everyone at the Houston Zoo: an Aquarium building where you can watch an amazing variety of fish swimming in beautiful surroundings. The zoo offers a small mammal building and a reptile building showing off many different species up close in their various habitats.

A favorite at the zoo is the beautiful indoor/outdoor bird facility with many wild birds flying all around you.  You must really hard look to see some of these birds hidden in the trees and various corners of this gorgeous habitat; and chances are you will see only a few of the birds there on any given visit.

If you like big cats or bears, they are displayed in large habitats which echo their original environments, rather than being housed in cages.  This is the way a zoo should be with large, lovely areas big enough for animals to roam around, yet be protected at the same time.  Another favorite place is the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo, where children can interact with, pet, and learn about various animals housed here, such as farm animals and prairie dogs, and many more.  There is also a Children’s Carousel Ride and play areas to run around and activities to hold their interests.

One of the new habitats which should be finished within the next 2 years is a new African Adventure habitat, where you may just think you’re in Africa and are not a Texas zoo.  This has been very well-planned and will definitely give be a thrill.

The Houston Zoo is open in the summer from 9:00a.m. until 7:00 p.m., but be sure to check ahead as their may be special hours.  Children under the age of 2 are free, 2 - 11 years of age are $4.00, and adult tickets are $8.50.  However, they have plans available such as the family plan.  If you would like to join and become a member of the Houston Zoo, there are a variety of affordable member packages available, each with special privileges and perks. All members get free admission to the zoo and special, short entry lines.

So, if you have never been to the Houston Zoo, or haven’t visited in a few years, it is time to go and have a unique zoo experience. Located near the Medical Center and Museum District, all ages can enjoy a great day seeing the Zoo with it’s beautiful walkways, exotic wildlife,  and natural habitats located in Houston, Texas.
